Levels: Level 6 | ||||||||||
This level is about
bridging the gap between you and the opponent, between the raw
techniques you've learned and putting them together seamlessly and
fluidly. At this level, work on more random attacks, moving
opponents and apply chi sao to everything you do. As before, improve
your self-control, distancing and timing. Remember to keep it simple
and direct. Be flexible and use control moves, joint locks and
takedowns but remember that sometimes its best to just hit the
opponent. Simple is better than fancy.Use grading comments to correct and improve techniques. Don’t feel intimidated by the new material. It all builds on the progress you've made so far. | |||||||||||
Level 6 Notes Smoother techniques, reading opponent attacks and apply chi sao to every technique, followup or self defense situation. Chi Sao starts with contact so make contact as early as possible, giving you a clearer signal of their intent. At this level, develop a better feel between inside and outside techniques using chi sao to select. For example, if an opponent round punches with sufficient intent, going outside allows the attacker energy to flow through and is easier than staying inside and doing a strong block. Stay inside if the attacker arm bounces off your block. Use chi sao to select which way to go and apply this to all techniques. Don't think with your mind which way to go, feel your way with chi sao, so make early contact to get information early. For example, if an opponent won't go one way, go the other, if they resist your technique or try to block your followup, let your kicks, punches or elbows seek the opening, trap them or use a collapsing kick to the knee to take them to the ground. In follow ups, you should be working towards being a relentless force that will put them down no matter how they move or resist. This does not mean being more aggressive or powerful, simply stay close, maintain contact, strike any opening and go with the flow. To develop this, have attackers try to evade, jump back or block your counter attacks some of the time. Remember, sometimes they don't resist and you can just hit them. Practice will develop the proper feel. Have no emotional feeling about the attacker's resistance or non-resistance to your followup. If they block or resist, simply move, adapt and strike until you've hit them at least 5 times and dissolved the threat. Continue to work on smooth technique with no breaks and reading attacks. Smooth does not mean fast. Pauses give opponents an opportunity to do something constructive to stop your counter attack. Smooth counterattacks with no pauses take away such opportunities. Lots of random drills develop the ability to read attacks. Try this. Slow, smooth defenses while the attacker comes in whatever speed they wish. You can always get better at this at any level. Relax your mind and don't react until it's clear what's happening. Start to mix in elbow strikes, take downs and joint locks in your finishing counter attack to use your full range, but remember, sometimes the simple 5 punch followup is still best. Don't overcomplicate things and exercise control with all counterattacks to keep it safe. 8 Random Parallel arm chi sao slips from forward stance
